From humble beginnings in 1982, Mr Chen’s is now Australia’s #1 dumpling brand, with a range of over 60 products including yum cha favourites, frozen meals, meal kits and pantry staples.

Peter Chen founds Chen Foods by bringing the first rice paper to Vietnamese refugees.

Introduces hard to find Asian specialities like durian, jackfruit and lemongrass.

Mr Chen sells his dumplings to local Asian supermarkets for the first time.

Our Story

We create Asian food with heart. More than 40 years ago, our father founded Mr Chen’s with a simple dream – to share the joy of authentic yum cha with Australian families. What began with a few handmade dumplings has grown into a proudly Aussie, family-owned business with a truly Asian heart.

Family has always been at the centre of everything we do. Dad taught us the craft and care behind every recipe, Mum inspired our dedication to sourcing the very best ingredients, and our brother’s adventurous spirit continues to push our flavours forward. Every dish we create is infused with that same love, curiosity, and connection to our roots.

Today, as the home of Australia’s #1 frozen dumpling brand, our range has expanded to include easy and delicious Asian snacks, ingredients and pantry staples – all crafted to bring people together around the table. Our mission is simple: to make every meal an opportunity to share heartful, authentic Asian flavour with those you love.

Who is Mr Chen?

Father. Foodie. Dumpling devotee.

When Mr Chen arrived in Australia in 1978 as a refugee from Vietnam, he brought his love of food with him, and a hunger to build a new life.

Since he can remember, Mr Chen has been obsessed with good food. One of his fondest memories goes back to when his grandmother gave him a few cents to buy a noodle breakfast the next day. Too excited to sleep, and too young to be allowed out in the morning rush on his own, he lowered a bucket to the noodle carts on the street below, to avoid missing out on his delicious treat. And an innovator was born.

When Mr Chen arrived in Australia and wanted an easier name for Australians to pronounce, he even chose Peter as his first name, after the beloved ice-cream brand. And while he may not have learned to speak English until he was 35, his lifelong appetite for learning to cook was insatiable.

Dumplings, however, always had Mr Chen’s heart – and he wanted to share his love for them with all Australians. So, in 1982 he founded the family business, bringing a whole world of authentic Asian flavours and recipes into Australian homes and restaurants every day.
